    About SciELO

    Description of DTD-SciELO Article structure

    The DTD-SciELO Article version 3.1 is responsible for defining the language of description of electronic journal articles. This DTD was based mainly on standard ISO 12083 (Electronic Manuscript Preparation and Markup), on the bibliographic description model used by Bireme (Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information) and on the database LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences Information).

    The element [article] comprises three groups similar to those in the element [serial] from DTD-SciELO Serial version 3.1: front matter [front], body matter [body] and back matter [back].

    Furthermore, the [article] has practically all attributes of the element [text] from DTD-SciELO Text version 3.1, previously described:

    1. Publisher Item Identifier [pii];
    2. Type of document [doctopic];
    3. Language [language];
    4. Center code [ccode];
    5. Status [status];
    6. Version [version];
    7. Type [type];
    8. Order [order];
    9. Section code [seccode];
    10. Sponsor [sponsor];
    11. Shortened title [stitle];
    12. Volume [volid];
    13. Sepplement volume [supplvol];
    14. Issue number [issueno];
    15. Supplement number [supplno];
    16. Date ISO [dateiso];
    17. International Standard Serial Number [issn];
    18. First page [fpage];
    19. Last page [lpage].

    Example of mark on article [article]: [article pii=nd doctopic=oa language=en ccode=br1.1 status=1 version=3.1 type='fig tab' order=01 seccode=nd stitle='Rev. Inst. Med. Trop. Sao Paulo' volid=39 issueno=4 dateiso=19970700 issn=0036-4665 fpage=108 lpage=120]

    The element front matter [front] of a journal article is composed of three large groups: title group [titlegrp], author group [authgrp] and complementary bibliographic element group [bibcom].

    The title group [titlegrp], like title group [titlegrp] presented in DTD-SciELO Text version 3.1, comprises títle model [m.title], and has the elements title [title] and subtitle [subtitle].

    The author group [authgrp] identifies the authors of the article marked. It is made of the elements: individual author [author] - which has the attributes occupation [role] indicating if the author is, for instance, an editor or an organizer and crossed identifier [rid], indicating the author's affiliation, followed by name model [m.name], with the elements surname [surname] and name [name]; and corporate author [corpauth] followed by organization model [m.org], with the elements organization name [orgname] and organization division [orgdiv].

    Example of mark on author group [authgrp] used in [article]: [authgrp][author role=nd rid=a01][fname]Maria Fernanda C. [/fname][surname]CARVALHO[/surname] [/author] (1), [author role=nd rid=a02][fname]Marcello F. de [/fname][surname]FRANCO [/surname][/author](2) & [author role=nd rid=a01][fname]Vitor Augusto[/fname] [surname] SOARES [/surname][/author][/authgrp]

    The last element of [front], the complementary bibliographic element group [bibcom], is made of the complementary bibliographic element model [m.bib].

    Figure 8

    This model encompasses the elements: abstract [abstract], keyword group [keygrp], conference group [confgrp], report [report], thesis group [thesgrp], article history [hist] and title model [m.title].

    The first element, abstract [abstract] indicates the abstract of the article and has the attribute language [language] to identify the abstract's language. More than one abstract may be marked on the journals containing abstracts in more than one language.

    Example of mark on abstract [abstract]: [abstract language=en] Trypanosoma cruzi , the causative agent of Chagas'disease assumes two distinct forms in vertebrate hosts: circulating trypomastigote and tissular amastigote. This latter form infects predominantly the myocardium, smooth and skeletal muscle, and central nervous system. The present work describes for the first time the detection of amastigote forms of T. cruzi in the renal parenchyma of a kidney graft recipient one month after transplantation. The patient was serologically negative for Chagas'disease and received no blood transfusion prior to transplant. The cadaver donor was from an endemic area for Chagas'disease. The recipient developed the acute form of the disease with detection of amastigote forms of T. cruzi in the renal allograft biopsy and circulating trypomastigote forms. The present report demonstrates that T. cruzi can infect the renal parenchyma. This mode of transmission warrants in endemic areas of Chagas'disease.[/abstract].

    The element keyword group [keygrp] has the attributes controlled vocabulary [scheme] indicating if the keywords used to describe the article have been taken from any specific vocabulary such as the DeCS. This group is composed of the elements: keyword [keyword], which has the attributes type [type], to identify if the descriptor [DG2]is primary or secondary, language [language] and crossed identifier [rid], indicating if there is any type of subkey; subkey (subkey) with the attribute identifier [id] indicating the relation with the element [keyword]; and period covered [dperiod] indicating the time period dealt with in the article. This element has the attributes from [from] and to [to] pointing out the initial date and final period analyzed and shall be entered in the same format as the ISO date (YYYYMMDD).

    Example of mark on keyword group [keygrp]: [keygrp scheme=nd] [keyword type=m language=en rid=k01]Chagas'disease[/keyword]- [subkey id=k01]symptoms[/subkey]; [keyword type=m language=en] Trypanosoma cruzi [/keyword]; [keyword type=m language=en]Kidney transplantation[/keyword]; [dperiod from=19930000 to=19970000]1993-1997[/dperiod] [/keygrp]

    The third element, conference group [confgrp] is composed of conference model [m.conf] indicates if the work has been previously presented at congresses or conferences, and contains the elements necessary to identify these events.

    Figure 9

    The conference model [m.conf] has the elements: sponsor [sponsor], indicating who has financed the event and is composed of organization model [m.org]; conference name [confname]; conference number [no]; date [date] indicating the first day of the event - it has the attribute date ISO [dateiso]; city [city], where the event took place; state [state] where the event was held; and country [country] where the event was held.

    Example of mark on conference group [confgrp]: [confgrp]Presented in part at [no]X[/no] [confname]International Conference on AIDS/STD[/confname], [city]Yokohama[/city], [country]Japan[/country], [date dateiso=19940806]6-11 August, 1994[/date].[/confgrp]

    The element report [report] of the complementary bibliographic element model [m.bib] is composed of the report model [m.rep]. This element is used to indicate if the text is a product of a project or of a technical report and provides information needed to identify this document.

    Figure 10

    The report model [m.rep] comprises the elements project sponsor [rsponsor] and project name [projname]. The element [rsponsor] has the elements organization model [m.org] and contract number [contract] used to identify the project.

    Example of mark on report [report]: [report]Supported in part by [rsponsor][orgname] FAPESP[/orgname]#[contract]90/4798-3[/contract][/rsponsor], [rsponsor][orgname]Ministry of Health of Brazil[/orgname], [orgdiv]Coordenação Nacional de DST e AIDS [/orgdiv] #[contract] 038/94[/contract][/rsponsor], and [rsponsor][orgname]NIH Fogarty International AIDS Training Grant[/orgname] #[contract]D43-TW00003[/contract][/rsponsor][/report]

    The fifth element of the [m.bib] is thesis group [thesgrp] made of thesis model [m.thes]. This group of elements indicates if the article is a product of a dissertation or thesis, and provides information necessary to identify this document.

    Figure 11

    The thesis model [m.thes] is composed of the elements city [city]; state [state]; country [country] - these three elements provide information on location of the institution where the dissertation or thesis was presented; the viva date [date], with the attribute date ISO [dateiso]; and degree [degree] of the product - whether it was a Master's Degree dissertation, a Ph.D. or Post-doctorate thesis; and by organization model [m.org] to identify the institution and its unit.

    Example of mark on thesis group [thesgrp]: [thesgrp][city]Washington[/city], [state]DC[/state], [date dateiso=19670000]1967[/date]. Diss. ( [degree]mestr.[/degree] ) - [orgname]Catholic University of America[/orgname], [orgdiv]Dept. of Library Science[/orgdiv][/thesgrp]

    The next element of the complementary bibliographic information model [m.bib] is history [hist], with the main dates of the article publication process in a journal issue. This element comprises the elements receipt date [received], with the attribute date ISO [dateiso] indicating the date when the article was submitted to analysis; date of approval [accepted], with the attribute date ISO [dateiso] indicating the date when the article was accepted for publishing; and review date [revised] with the attribute date ISO [dateiso] - indicating the dates the article was revised.

    Example of mark on history [hist]: [hist]Recebido para publicação em [received dateiso=19970429] 29/04/1997 [/received]. Revisto em [revised dateiso=19960526] 26/05/1997 [/revised]. Aceito para publicação em [accepted dateiso=19970725] 25/07/1997 [/accepted] [/hist]

    The last element of the complementary bibliographic information model [m.bib] is title model [m.title].

    The second element of the article [article] is the body matter [body]. This element is the main text of the articles. In this methodology version, in addition to receiving the mark HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) responsible for the text's presentation and availability in the Web, the element may also receive the mark of the elements present in the floating element model [i.float] previously described.

    The last element of the [article] is the back matter [back]. This element is responsible for identifying the other complementary bibliographic elements and also the elements belonging to bibliographic references, which are the bases to evaluation studies of the national scientific production. The [back] comprises five elements: back complementary bibliographic element group [bbibcom], bibliographic list in Vancouver format [vancouv], bibliographic list in ISO 690/87 format [iso690], bibliographic list in ABNT 6023/89 format [abnt6023] and bibliographic list [other] in formats that do not comply with the previous standards.

    The first element of the [back], back complementary bibliographic element group [bbibcom] is composed of the complementary bibliographic element model [m.bib], previously described.

    The four last elements of the [back] are exclusive: if a bibliographic list format is adopted, no other format can be used.

    The first bibliographic list is the bibliographic list in Vancouver format [vancouv]. The element [vancouv] complies with the Vancouver model [m.van] and contains the attributes standard [standard] indicating the standard used and reference number [count] indicating the number of references in the article.

    Figure 12

    The vancouver model [m.van] consists of the element citation in vancouver format [vcitat] identifying each reference in the bibliographic list. This element is made of number [no] identifying the number of the bibliographic references; contribution in vancouver format [vcontrib]; serial publication in vancouver format [viserial]; and monograph in vancouver format [vmonog].

    The elements [vcontrib], [viserial] and [vmonog] are elements that could be combined in order to mark a bibliographic reference. The element contribution in vancouver format [vcontrib] is used to identify the part from the whole set. A journal article is a part of a journal, therefore, its reference is marked with the elements [vcontrib] and [viserial]. A chapter of a book is part of a monograph so that it should be marked with the elements [vcontrib] and [vmonog]. A complete monograph shall be marked only with the element [vmonog]. To use these three elements, it is important to clarify what is the part and what is the whole set.

    The element contribution in vancouver format [vcontrib] comprises the elements individual author [author], with the previously described attributes [role] and [rid], composed of name model [m.name]; corporate author [corpauth] made of organization model [m.org]; and others [et-al] indicating the reference includes authors who are not described; and the element title in vancouver format [vtitle], composed of title model [m.title] and by identification of publication type [tp].

    The second element is the serial publication in vancouver format [viserial] and is composed of the elements: shortened title in vancouver format [vstitle], which is made of the elements shortened title [stitle] and publication type [tp]; in press [inpress] indicates the document is still in the press; date [date] indicates the publishing date and has the attribute date ISO [dateiso]; cited in [cited] points out when the document was last accessed in the Web - it also has the attributes date ISO [dateiso]; volume [volid]; issue number [issueno]; supplement number [suppl]; part number [part] for issues that are divided into parts; pages [pages] indicating the first and last pages of an article; extent [extent] indicating the total number of pages; and the last element, electronic direction [url] indicating location of the journal in the Web.

    The last element of [vcitat] is the monograph in vancouver format [vmonog], which provides information about the monograph. The elements comprising [vmonog] are: author [author] - with the attributes [role] and [rid] - composed of the name model [m.name]; corporate author [corpauth] made of organization model [m.org]; and others [et-al] indicating that some authors are not mentioned; title in vancouver format [vtitle], composed of title model [m.title] and publication type [tp]; number of edition [edition] of the publication; version [version] of the publication - used for electronic documents; conference group [confgrp] made of conference model [m.conf]; city [city]; state [state] - the latter two indicate the physical location of the monograph publishing house; name of publisher or publishing house [pubname]; in press [inpress]; date [date] of the publication - with the attribute date ISO [dateiso]; first and last pages of the publication [pages]; report [report] in compliance with the project model [m.rep]; and the last element thesis [thesis] according to thesis model [m.thesis]. The last two elements indicate if the monograph is a thesis or a project report and if it contains the elements necessary to identify such information.
